LPS (Lymphocytic Plasmacytic Stomatitis)

LPS is a condition caused by both plaque, bacteria and the bacterial by-products that lead to an inflammatory response by the cat's body resulting in a severe red, ulcerated and painful mouth. LPS is most often seen in Oriental breed cats.

Treatment begins with blood tests to rule out kidney and liver problems; feline AIDS; followed by a complete and thorough teeth cleaning remove the bacteria and tartar; and radiographs (x-rays) to search for broken tooth roots and FDRLs, which can then be extracted.

Medications, including antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, and homecare can be started following the dental cleaning to slow the return of the plaque. Sometimes teeth have to be removed to control the condition, but a number of cats can be controlled with dietary changes and a complete homecare regime.
